Never before has anything been stolen from me.

And of course the one thing that has to be stolen is my necklace.

It infuriates me. Who would bother to steal something so small? ...Sure, it's a good-looking necklace, but...

God. Someone did this to mess with me.

It was my good luck charm, so here's hoping nothing bad happens on the way.

I walk into the elevator, slinging my bag over my shoulder. Pressing the 7th floor button, I lean against the yellowed wallpaper and look around.

If I were a thief, where would I be...?

My thoughts are cut short when the elevator lurches. Come on. This thing better not be stuck. I press the emergency button. Nothing. I press it again.

Nothing.

Who runs this place!? Clearly, they've gotta be fired.

I wait for what feels like an hour, cursing whoever did such a bang-up job on this lift. That thief's gotta be miles away by now. Suddenly, there's a harsh, piercing buzzing.

"PLEASE BE PATIENT, WE'RE TRYING OUR BEST."

Oh, I'm sure you are.

I sit down, rubbing my forehead. I sort out possible suspects in my mind, and come up blank. I don't know anyone who would mess with me like that. No one has that kind of gall.

I'm about to fall asleep when the elevator lurches again. I'm taken to my floor, and the doors open to a man.

"I'm so sorry, we tried our best. We had to get into the wires to get it to work again," he mutters, running his hand through his dark hair. As he shakes his head, I notice something glint.

"Excuse me, sir, can I see what's around your neck?"

He makes a confused hmm, removing the chain around his neck and presenting it to me. The green glint is all I need to see.

"Where did you find that?"

"It was sitting on the floor! I picked it up and finders, keepers, right?"

I don't shake my smile. I zone out, grinning and staring emptily at my necklace.

"Yeah?"

He nods vigorously. "It's like some kind of good luck charm! When I put it on, I got the elevator to work."

"That's enough of that," I hiss, ripping it out of his hand. "That's mine. I'll be taking it back now."
